I've just discovered your blog. I've been trying to learn to live in peace by not predicting (worrying) about the future. Some of my reading about living has taken me to Buddha's beliefs. I particularly want to understand the Buddha's belief that our life is what we have willed.

Reading your blogs has helped my understanding, and I'm going to continue my research and study by reading the books you've recommended. My question concerns another blog I read. I tried to send this question to the blogger, however the site was in a foreign language, and I couldn't submit the question. So I copied my comment and questions and pasted it below. I look forward to your insight.

What about cancer? I understand and believe actions have consequences, but how can a young person, a beautiful person who helped others and cared about doing right in the world be struck and die from cancer. I'm speaking of my wife. She was always afraid that the bad things that happened in her life, including cancer were a punishment from God or the universe. By the time of her death, she found peace through prayer and meditation and believed her dying didn’t have an explanation other than it was time for her to leave this world. I know she never wanted anyone to feel responsible for his or her disease as she initially felt with her diagnosis.

Eventually, she realized she was going to die and made a choice to stop treatment and let the universe (God) have control. By that time she had prayed, mediated, and studied enough to know in her heart she didn't cause her cancer.

And if her disease was a result of bad karma, surely my wife had gone through enough hard things in her life (miscarriage, couldn't bare children, lying parents, uncaring, selfish first husband, divorce, etc.), to offset any bad karma she might have caused.

It seems to me that if you can change your karma, surely my wife had enough sadness and loss in her life to offset any of her bad karma. Today, the world would be a better place if she were still here. Not just for me, but for others. She's known around the world for helping women navigate the medical industry to obtain a correct diagnosis of endometriosis and treatment. Her blogs and articles still appear on the internet. She touched lives around the globe. How much good does a person have to do to overcome the bad in his or her life? And how do we reconcile disease as a result of previous actions in our lives?
